Double-digit multiplication can be tricky. Turtlehead always seems to make my kids “get it.” 🙌🐢 . We always start with the foundations of understanding multiplication and the “why” behind the steps, but tricks like these help struggling students nail the order of steps. 💡Another favorite of mine is using the Division Family for long division (coming next month!) . Do you have any favorite go-to tricks to help with math processes? ⤵️
MATH SPEED DATING: My go-to quick review after teaching a concept that students “get” quickly! 📚 Students sit in two lines with dry erase boards facing one another. Then, they all solve the same problem. When I tell them to reveal, they show the person across from them. They then discuss the answer and how they got it! 🙌 Then one line rotates! 👫 This is also great for students to use higher order thinking skills to “teach” each other and help those who may have slight misconceptions. This could be used for more than just math operations too! 🤓 What could you use it for that you’re teaching right now? ⤵️
EASIEST last minute engaging WHOLE GROUP practice ever. ✨ In my room, it’s the LaGrow show. 🎤Sometimes just some guided practice with me walking around seeing how individuals are doing is needed. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I turn on a game show music playlist on Spotify and interview students about how they got their answers. I tried this once as a last minute effort and... it works. Every time. They EAT IT UP. 🙌 This idea works for any subject! Do you have any easy engagement tips for whole group practice? ⤵️
When people ask what my plans are for over break. ⬆️ . . But really, five days in a row off is exactly what I needed. 🙌 I do need to be productive at some point... but Netflix is calling. I hope you all are taking some time for YOU! ✨ What about you, are you a true #crimejunkie (slight pun intended @crimejunkiepodcast) like me, or do you want to run and hide when it’s on? ⤵️
Did you know a woman used her voice for 17 YEARS until Abraham Lincoln finally listened to her? Meet Sarah Hale. 💪🏼 . . Thanksgiving was not a national holiday until the fifth President she wrote to listened. 🦃 He thought it was a great way to unify the country during Civil War. Our traditional foods also come from recipes she published in magazines. 👩🏻‍🍳 . I’m so excited to read Thank You, Sarah by @halseanderson on Tuesday to my students. I love that this has a built in theme of using your voice too. 🙌 Also shoutout to @apron_education for first telling about this powerful woman. Have you ever heard of her before? ⤵️
Let your students know WHY you’re thankful for them. 🧡🦃 . This was hung outside our door after my students got back from PE. I got a lot of “What’s this for, Miss LaGrow?” And my reply was “it’s important to let people know how thankful you are for them.” 👫 How do you show your students you’re thankful for them (and I’m not limiting this to Thanksgiving)? ⤵️
